Dia Mirza has once again proved that a timeless saree can make a statement without too much effort. For the Delhi premiere of Operation Safed Sagar, the actor stepped out in a stunning rich maroon Banarasi handloom saree that came straight from her mother’s wardrobe. And as beautiful as it was sentimental, the saree was so rich in gold motifs and ornate zari border and craftsmanship.

Dia shared pictures of her look on Instagram to give fashion fans a look at the traditional outfit. And her saree was certainly the star of the evening, but the story behind it made the outfit even more special. Wearing a saree her mother has passed on to her gave a more personal touch to what looks like an outfit on the red carpet that went beyond that.
The Banarasi saree had a rich maroon base and was made up with delicate gold motifs that were woven into the fabric. Its zari border was a regal touch so the traditional drape felt very festive, sophisticated. Instead of a conventional blouse, Dia selected a deep navy blue Mandarin-collar blouse. The structured blouse added a modern edge to the more conventional attire and made a nice contrast to the warm colour of the saree.
The styling was deliberately understated, but the craftsmanship of the handloom saree was at the centre of it. Dia’s makeup was soft and elegant, with small defined eyes, a little flush of colour on her cheeks and a muted lip. The beauty look complemented the richness of the saree without competing with it.
Her hairstyle added another layer of old-world charm. Dia styled her hair in soft side-swept waves and had a polished silhouette that was very classic without being too traditional. She was in touch with her style and she was so natural at fashion; I think heritage pieces are often very traditional and contemporary.
Then came the jewellery. Dia was wearing her Banarasi saree with delicate gold dangler earrings and a dainty bracelet. Instead of adding statement items, she opted for gold details in this saree. A classic black belt watch was an unexpected modern touch, showing yet again how traditional Indian wear can be done differently and feel fresh and modern.
There was more to Dia’s saree than the obvious stylishness of the outfit. The actor has always been very proud of India’s rich textile tradition and the artisans who make them. She had a chance to recognize the country’s handloom heritage and the people and stories behind these beautiful textiles in her World Handloom Day post.
Indian handloom sarees are more than clothes. Each weave is a product of centuries of learning, painstaking craftsmanship and cultural heritage. From the selection of yarn and dyeing of the fabric to the intricate weaving of motifs and borders, the creation of a handloom saree can involve hours of laborious work. For many artisan communities, these traditional trades are also closely tied to livelihood and the preservation of cultural identity.
Dia’s decision to wear her mother’s Banarasi saree is especially meaningful. It’s the two kinds of heritage: the personal, family heirloom heritage and the larger cultural legacy in the handloom craftsmanship of our own people. That saree may have come from her mother, but Dia wears it herself, and Dia is giving it another chapter in the story.
Her latest look is also a reminder of why Banarasi sarees continue to hold such a special place in Indian fashion. They’re woven in such a way with such fine textures and long-lasting appeal, they’re not only easy to move from generation to generation. A well-preserved Banarasi can be worn by a mother, daughter and even granddaughter, and in the process, they carry memories forward and remain relevant for a new era.
Dia Mirza’s maroon Banarasi saree moment perfectly expresses that sentiment. It is elegant without being excessive, traditional without feeling dated and personal without losing its fashion appeal. And most importantly, it celebrates the idea that some of the most beautiful clothes are the ones that carry a story.
Dia has shown how Indian textiles can be styled with grace and modernity again with her mother’s saree, understated beauty look, contemporary blouse and thoughtfully chosen accessories. And if her latest appearance is anything to go by, the saree remains one of her most effortless fashion signatures.
