Bollywood has always been associated with fashion. From glamorous sarees and fine suits to dramatic red-carpet gowns, the Hindi film industry has influenced how generations of Indians dress and express themselves.
But Bollywood fashion has changed; while traditional elegance is still very much a part of the Bollywood culture, oversized silhouettes, sneakers, denim, athleisure, coordinated sets, and modern streetwear are now the dominant themes of the fashion scene, and the trend is evolving.

For decades, the saree was one of the most recognisable elements of Bollywood fashion. Actresses often appeared in elegant drapes with elaborate embroidery, traditional fabrics, and statement jewellery. These classic Bollywood movies brought into common use specific saree styles, colors, and blouse designs, giving screen costumes a new image.
The saree is still a major part of Bollywood celebrities’ wardrobes, whether it’s for weddings, festivals, award ceremonies, or other formal occasions.
What has changed is how traditional clothes are being styled. Modern Bollywood celebrities have started to experiment with unconventional blouse designs, belts, jackets, modern jewellery, and unexpected footwear. Sarees could be paired with crop-style blouses, structured tops, or modern accessories to create a look that showcases Indian craftsmanship today. Classic clothing is still relevant and appeals to young people’s tastes.
At the same time, streetwear is an integral part of celebrity wardrobes. Oversized shirts, baggy jeans, cargo trousers, hoodies, sneakers, baseball caps, and relaxed jackets are now part and parcel of casual celebrity fashion. What was once associated with youth culture and urban fashion has entered mainstream Bollywood styling. Celebrity fashion is showing that comfort and fashion can be integrated, particularly when everyday clothing is carefully curated.
In addition to that, athleisure has also been a big part of the change. Comfortable trousers, coordinated sets, sneakers, and sporty jackets are now very evident in airport looks. Bollywood celebrities have taken these practical items and turned them into aspirational ones. They show us how celebrity style is not just for glamorous events; everyday appearances can also generate a lot of fashion interest.
Social media has been an integral part of the process for that progress. In the past, people saw celebrities mostly via movies, magazine covers, and television. Today, Instagram and other sites provide access to celebrity wardrobes almost daily. A casual outfit worn at an airport or during a coffee run can quickly become a fashion trend. Fashion is more immediate, interactive, and diverse because celebrities are more directly connected with the public and audience.
Another important change is the increasing willingness to try gender-neutral and unconventional silhouettes. The lines between men’s and women’s fashion are less rigid, and oversized jackets, relaxed trousers, sneakers, and layered outfits are seen all over celebrity wardrobes. The younger Bollywood generation is increasingly using fashion as a form of personal expression rather than just following established rules.
Indian designers are also contributing to this new fashion era by marrying traditional craftsmanship with modern design. Modern silhouettes such as structured jackets, dresses, coordinated sets, and fusion outfits are being created using handwoven fabrics and embroidered Indian textile techniques. This creates a bridge between India's rich fashion history and new international trends.
Bollywood fashion has also become more global. International fashion weeks, luxury brands, global styling teams, and collaborations have exposed celebrities to a wide range of influences. At the same time, Indian celebrities are bringing elements of Indian fashion onto international platforms. The result is a more fluid fashion culture in which Indian and global aesthetics influence each other.
That does not mean traditional fashion is dead. Bollywood’s new fashion era is one of coexistence. A celebrity might wear an elaborate saree for one event and oversized streetwear the next. Traditional lehengas, kurta sets, and sarees continue to dominate festive and wedding fashion, while streetwear and contemporary clothing are becoming increasingly important for everyday style.
Ultimately, the transition from sarees to streetwear reflects a cultural shift. Bollywood fashion is becoming more experimental, individualistic, and comfortable while still maintaining strong connections to Indian heritage. Today’s celebrity style is not about choosing between tradition and modernity.
As Bollywood continues to shape fashion in India and elsewhere, the future will see even more experimentation. Traditional textiles will be incorporated into modern streetwear, and global trends will continue to be interpreted through an Indian lens. From the generations-old saree to the everyday sneaker, Bollywood’s fashion story is in a state of transition in which anything can be part of the style conversation.
