Don’t Like Okra’s Slimy Texture? Here Are 4 Reasons to Give Bhindi Another Chance

Many people avoid **okra, commonly known as bhindi or lady’s finger**, because of its slimy texture. Children, in particular, may not eat the vegetable for years because parents tell kids that “eating bhindi will make you good at maths.” And yes, that is just a saying, but okra has some health benefits so it is worth including in a balanced diet.

Reasons to Give Bhindi Another Chance

Chennai-based fitness and nutrition coach Raj Ganpath recently identified four nutritional reasons why one should not ignore this humble vegetable. In an Instagram video on September 1, he said okra has a lot of fibre, magnesium, vitamins and antioxidants and therefore is very useful for you in a healthy manner.

1. Okra is rich in fibre

One of the nutritional advantages of okra is its fibre content. It contains both soluble and insoluble fibre which can support digestive health and regular bowel movements.

The gel-like substance that gives cooked okra its characteristic slimy texture is actually related to its soluble fibre. This type of fibre can help slow the absorption of carbohydrates and sugars during digestion.

Okra also has pectin, a type of fibre that can support beneficial bacteria in the gut. Raj said that about 100 grams of okra contains around three to four grams of fibre for only about 30 calories.

2. It provides magnesium

Okra is also a source of magnesium, a mineral that is essential for all bodily functions. Magnesium supports normal nerve and muscle function and also plays a role in maintaining healthy bones and regulating blood sugar.

Raj said that 100 grams of okra can provide around 50–60 mg of magnesium, but nutritional values can vary depending on the variety and preparation.

3. It contains vitamins C and K

Another reason to eat bhindi is its vitamin content: Okra has vitamin C and vitamin K, two nutrients that perform important functions in the body.

Vitamin C is an antioxidant. It supports normal immune function, collagen production and tissue repair. Vitamin K is very important for normal blood clotting and is associated with healthy bones.

Raj tells us that 100 grams of okra can provide a significant proportion of the daily requirements for these vitamins.

4. Okra contains antioxidants

Okra also contains plant compounds with antioxidant properties, including polyphenols. Antioxidants protect cells from oxidative stress caused by free radicals.

A diet rich in vegetables and other plant foods is key to health. Some of the compounds in vegetables may also support cardiovascular and brain health, although eating okra alone shouldn’t be considered a treatment for any disease.

How to make okra more appealing

If sliminess is one reason you don’t like bhindi, preparation can help. Thoroughly drying the vegetable before cutting and cooking with minimal added moisture can help reduce its slimy consistency. Roasting or sautéing can also result in a firmer texture.

No single food can provide all the nutrition your body needs. But you can eat a lot of different vegetables and improve overall dietary quality.

So the next time you skip okra because of its texture, remember that the “slime” is not necessarily something to avoid—it is partly linked to the vegetable’s useful fibre content.
