Can Intense Gaming Trigger A Heart Attack? What Experts And Research Say

Video games can be fun, competitive, and even emotionally stressful. And in a particularly tense match, the player might feel his heart beating faster, his palms sweating or his breathing changing. So could a very intense game actually trigger a heart attack?

Can Intense Gaming Trigger A Heart Attack?

The answer is more complicated than a simple yes or no.

Such intense gaming can produce a temporary stress response with rapid fluctuations of heart rate and blood pressure in people with certain underlying heart conditions. For some people with certain underlying heart conditions, intense emotional stimulation from gaming may be associated with potentially dangerous abnormal heart rhythms. But serious cardiac complications associated with gaming appear to be rare.

It is also important to distinguish between a heart attack and cardiac arrest. A heart attack occurs when blood flow to a part of the heart is blocked and cardiac arrest happens when an electrical problem causes the heart to stop pumping.

Why do intense gaming raise heart rate?

Competitive games can activate the body’s “fight or flight” response, particularly when players experience excitement, frustration, fear or intense competition.

During this response, stress hormones such as adrenaline are released. Heart rate and blood pressure can temporarily rise as the body responds to a perceived threat. The American Heart Association says stress can raise heart rate and blood pressure, and that stress long-term can result in cardiovascular risk.

There are also differences between games. A study examining the physiological effects of gaming found that some action-oriented games had more cardiovascular responses than less intense games. Playing violent video games was linked to increased sympathetic nervous system activity and pulse rate and blood pressure in another study conducted in 2026 with young adults.

This is not to say every jump in heart rate while gaming is bad. Heart rate naturally tends to change at high intensity, while working out or otherwise in general.

What about Sudden Cardiac Arrest?

This is where the research is really necessary.

A 2023 study in Heart Rhythm looked at potentially life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias associated with electronic gaming in children. Researchers have identified 22 patients aged 7 to 16 who had suspected or confirmed ventricular arrhythmias during gaming. Six had sudden cardiac arrest, and four died.

But many of these children were also found to have underlying structural conditions that made them vulnerable to abnormal heart rhythms. These included catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia and long QT syndrome.

The study concluded that electronic gaming can act as a trigger for lethal arrhythmias in susceptible children, especially during emotionally intense games. But the frequency seemed to be low.

Another study of patients with genetically mediated heart diseases found that gaming-associated cardiac events were extremely rare. Only five gaming-associated events were identified among 3,370 patients in the study population before diagnosis, further indicating that such events are rare.

Long gaming sessions can bring other risks.

The concern is not just the novelty of a particular game. Playing many consecutive hours of gaming can result in long hours of sitting, sleep deprivation, dehydration, caffeine consumption, and irregular eating.

An exploratory study of nine healthy adult men studying two consecutive 18-hour gaming sessions examined caffeine and calorie consumption during the study and found changes in cardiovascular measurements. Because the study was very small, it cannot establish that long gaming sessions cause long-term heart disease, but it does suggest that there are potential concerns about playing too much sedentary gaming.

A separate review of reported deaths associated with gaming found that these cases were rare and frequently involved extremely long gaming sessions lasting nearly a day or even several days, with little rest. They said that chronic sitting, dehydration, sleep deprivation, exhaustion, and stress can lead to serious complications in susceptible individuals.

That makes marathon gaming sessions a different thing from playing for a reasonable period of time and taking breaks.

Who Should Be More Careful?

People with heart conditions may have to be particularly sensitive to strong emotional triggers while gaming.

This includes people with diagnosed heart rhythm disorders, certain inherited heart conditions or a history of unexplained fainting. In children and teenagers, unexplained fainting or a family history of sudden cardiac death should also be medically evaluated instead of being dismissed as simply part of gaming.

The American Heart Association notes that sudden cardiac arrest in young people may be caused by an undiagnosed heart rhythm disorder or structural heart problem.

For otherwise healthy people, no evidence that playing video games regularly causes heart attacks. Instead, the evidence indicates a high risk of rare but potentially serious rhythm events in susceptible individuals and associated concerns related to excessive sedentary gaming.

What Warning Signs Should Not Be Ignored

Whether someone is gaming, exercising, or simply sitting at home, certain symptoms should never be ignored.

Seek urgent medical attention for symptoms such as:

Severe or persistent chest pressure or pain. Shortness of breath. Fainting or loss of consciousness. A sudden, racing or irregular heartbeat accompanied by dizziness. Unexplained severe weakness. Pain or discomfort spreading to the arm, back, neck, or jaw.

If someone becomes unresponsive and is not breathing normally, it may be cardiac arrest and requires immediate emergency help and CPR while an AED is obtained if available.

The Bottom Line

Intense gaming can temporarily raise heart rate, blood pressure and stress levels during high-stakes or emotionally charged games. In people with certain underlying heart rhythm conditions, gaming has been identified as a potential trigger for dangerous arrhythmias.

However, a normal increase in heart rate during an exciting game is not the same as having a heart attack, and serious gaming-related cardiac events appear to be rare.

The bigger concern for frequent gamers may be the overall pattern surrounding long sessions: prolonged sitting, inadequate sleep, dehydration, excessive caffeine, and a lack of physical activity. Taking regular breaks, staying hydrated, maintaining a healthy sleep schedule, and getting regular physical activity can help reduce some of these risks.
