Why Some Italians Prefer Traditional Pizza Over Domino’s

Italy is known for pizza, but not every type of pizza is equally popular among Italians. Traditional Italian pizza has a history, and in Naples where pizza Napoletana has become globally known pizza.

Why Some Italians Prefer Traditional Pizza Over Domino’s

This food tradition is certainly one of the reasons some Italians have been critical of the pizza chains like Domino’s. But that is not to say that most Italians hate Domino’s; it’s not that they hate Domino’s. Opinion varies, and people prefer various types of pizza.

Traditional Pizza vs Fast-Food Pizza.

Pizza is for many Italian pizza lovers more than a quick meal. Traditional pizzas have very few ingredients, fresh produce and a good dough.

Neapolitan pizza, for example, is known for its soft, elastic dough, high-temperature baking and relatively simple toppings.

Domino’s took on a different model. Its pizzas are made for consistency, convenience, delivery and broad consumer preference. The menu may contain toppings and combinations that most of us do not find on traditional Italian pizza menus.

The philosophy differences can create a cultural divide.

The Importance of Dough

The dough is one of the most important parts of Italian pizza culture. Many Italian pizzerias spend more than a few hours in the lab and fermentation of dough before they’re actually baked.

Many Italian pizza fans like a thin, light and airy crust, particularly when eating Neapolitan pizza.

In fast food pizza chains, speed, consistency and a texture that will make it through delivery are generally the most important. For consumers who have grown up eating fast food pizza, that experience can be very different.

Toppings can also be controversial.

Italian cuisine tends to have very few ingredients. Some international pizza menus, on the other hand, are equipped with combinations that might seem unusual to traditional Italian diners.

Very heavy toppings, excessive cheese or sweet-and-savoury combinations can clash with some people's idea of what pizza should be.

But preferences are personal. Italians have very different tastes and modern pizzerias all over the place experiment with ingredients and techniques.

Why Domino’s still attracted Italian customers?

Domino’s did enter the Italian market and attracted attention with its delivery-oriented approach. The company had a different pizza style than the traditional pizzerias.

For some customers, especially younger consumers, convenience and variety may be more important than following traditional culinary customs.

The presence of international chains also shows how food cultures change. Italian consumers can get traditional pizza at one time and an international fast-food version at the other.

Pizza is more than a recipe.

The debate is ultimately about food culture and expectations. Italians have a great connection to pizza so comparisons between traditional pizzerias and international chains can be particularly passionate.

But saying that Italians hate Domino’s is oversimplifying the dispute. Some enjoy traditional pizza, some like modern versions, others may just buy things on the basis of convenience and price.

Tradition Meets Global Food Culture

And Domino’s is a global, universal approach to pizza while traditional Italian pizzerias are centuries of regional food culture and craftsmanship.

The two can be present and well with each other because pizza has become so well-known as far as pizza in general over the years beyond its Italian origins. The question is not of whether one style is better than others but why different cultures and consumers make different assumptions about what makes the perfect pizza.
