Haircut Before a Big Event? Here’s the Best Time to Get One

A fresh haircut before a big event sounds simple, but timing can make a big difference. A haircut that looks perfect at the salon may need a little time to settle into its natural shape.

Haircut Before a Big Event? Here’s the Best Time to Get One

You might cut fresh hair (and fresh hair that is fresh from a fresh cut can be harder or different from what you expected when your hair gets sharp or different from you if you’ve changed your hairstyle or tried a new length when you have changed your hairstyle and/or length. But when you set a date for the appointment, you may be able to have your hair to come out with a haircut and get to work, and if you make your hair to fit in before the appointment you have done it, and as long as you’ve planned for it in advance you can be sure that you have time to move your hair and keep the cut fresh.

For a Regular Trim: 3 to 7 Days Before

If you are only getting your usual haircut or trimming split ends, you can always make the appointment three to seven days before the event is going to happen.

A few days late and you would have to do what you want to do to make the hair look nice. With this chance to get used to it, you might change a little styling.

For short hair: 3 to 5 days before

Short hairstyles can more clearly show changes in shape and length. If you wear a bob, pixie cut or another short style, get your haircut about three to five days before the event.

The extra few days will give hair time to settle naturally and still show up clean as if it’s a fresh cut.

For Medium or Long Hair: 5 to 10 Days Before

People who have medium or long hair will prefer getting their haircut about five to ten days before a big event.

This is especially useful if you are planning curls, waves, a blowout or an updo. The slightly grown-in look is sometimes easy to style, the ends still look fresh.

Trying a completely new hairstyle?

If you’re going to make such a transformation, don’t do it right after the first time you try it. You should try a new hairstyle at least two to three weeks before the event.

This gives you time to decide if you like the length and shape. If something needs to be corrected, there is also time for adjustments.

What About Bangs?

Bangs need to be thought out, because such a small difference in length can change your appearance. If you’re already getting bangs, a light trim around three or five days before the event will do the trick.

But don’t make brand new bangs just before an important occasion.

Don’t forget the Styling Plan.

Your haircut should match the hairstyle you want to wear at the event. If you are planning a really elaborate hairstyle, tell your hairstylist before the event. They can make decisions about the length, layers and shape required for the final look.

Final Haircut Tip

The safest way is to save last minute experiments for the event. For a familiar haircut, it’s good to think about it a week before the event as a general window. For a completely new look, think much earlier.

Most importantly, choose a hairstyle that you are comfortable keeping and styling. A little preparation can help ensure your hair looks polished and feels manageable when the big day arrives.
