Dealing With Frizzy, Lifeless Hair This Monsoon? Here's How To Bring It Back To Life

Humidity is inevitable, but bad hair days don’t have to be. The monsoon can be such a romantic moment with rain-soaked evenings, steaming cups of chai and the earthy scent of petrichor in the air. But while we may love the weather, our hair often has a very different opinion.

As humidity levels rise, hair absorbs humidity from the air and the strands swell and the cuticle starts to lift. The result? Frizz, flyaways, tangles and hair that suddenly looks dull and difficult to maintain. If you’re naturally wavy or curly, these problems might be exacerbated.

The good news is that I don’t need a complicated 10-step routine to get my hair back on track. You can change a few minor things in your monsoon haircare routine to keep it moist, minimize breakage and make your locks easier to keep up with.

Wash Your Hair According To Your Scalp Type

One popular monsoon myth is that washing your hair less frequently will automatically reduce frizz. But sweat, excess oil, pollution and product build-up can accumulate quickly during humid weather. This can leave the scalp greasy while making the lengths look dull and limp.

If you can’t apply a washing schedule, pay attention to your scalp. If it is oily or sweaty daily, you need to wash your hair more often. Choose a mild shampoo to wash your scalp so that it does not leave the scalp dry and do not leave the lengths too dry.

For budget-friendly products, L'Oréal Paris Hyaluron Moisture 72H Shampoo, BBlunt Intense Moisture Shampoo and Love Beauty & Planet Argan Oil & Lavender Shampoo are worth considering. A premium option is Kérastase Genesis Bain Hydra-Fortifiant Shampoo or Olaplex No.4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo, especially if the hair is chemically treated or damaged.

Never Skip Conditioner

Conditioner is so important in the monsoon because humidity makes hair very difficult to detangle and style. A good conditioner will smooth the hair cuticle, make it soft and reduce friction between strands.

Apply conditioner mainly to the mid-lengths and ends rather than concentrating it on the scalp. For everyday use, L'Oréal Paris Hyaluron Moisture Conditioner and Dove Intense Repair Conditioner are convenient choices; Moroccanoil Hydrating Conditioner, Olaplex No.5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner and Kérastase Genesis Fondant Renforçateur Conditioner are options for those who are willing to spend more.

Add A Hair Mask To Your Routine

If your hair is still dry, rough and lifeless even after regular conditioning, then use a nourishing hair mask once or twice a week.

A hair mask can provide more intense conditioning and may leave the strands softer and easier to manage. Affordable options include L'Oréal Paris Total Repair 5 Hair Mask, Dove 10-in-1 Deep Repair Treatment Hair Mask, Pilgrim Argan Oil Hair Mask and Plum Avocado Nourish-Up Hair Mask. Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask, Olaplex No.8 Bond Intense Moisture Mask and Kérastase Masquintense Hair Mask are the more luxurious options.

Remember, more product doesn’t necessarily mean better results. Follow the instructions on the product and adjust frequency according to your hair’s needs.

Try A Pre-Wash Oil Treatment

Sometimes simple haircare habits are effective. A pre-wash oil treatment will help the hair to be moisturized and manageable and will also help if the lengths are drying.

Coconut oil remains a popular one. If you are looking to have rosemary oil on your scalp, dilute it with a carrier oil such as coconut or jojoba oil rather than applying concentrated essential oil onto the scalp. Leave the treatment on for about 20 to 30 minutes before shampooing.

If your scalp is sensitive or you experience irritation, stop the treatment and don’t try to apply any more than one oil at the same time.

Be Careful With Heat Styling

Humidity can lead you to seek your straightener more frequently, but excessive heat styling can lead to dryness and breakage. If possible, let your hair air-dry partially before using a blow dryer or any other styling tool.

If you do use heat, always apply a heat protectant first. Products like BBlunt Hot Shot Heat Protection Mist, L'Oréal Paris Dream Lengths No Haircut Cream and Moroccanoil Perfect Defense can be incorporated into a heat-styling routine.

Try to keep the temperature as low as possible and avoid passing hot tools over the same part of hair.

Don't Fight Wet Hair With A Brush

Wet hair is more prone to stretching and breakage, so aggressive brushing immediately after a shower can do more harm than good. Instead, softly squeeze out excess water with a soft towel or T-shirt and use a wide-tooth comb to detangle.

Start at the ends and gradually work up. This approach puts less stress on the roots and can help minimize unnecessary breakage.

Use A Leave-In Product

A lightweight leave-in conditioner, cream or serum can be very useful in humid weather. Apply a small amount to damp mid-lengths and ends, avoiding the scalp if the product tends to make your hair greasy.

The goal is to smooth and protect the lengths without weighing them down. Start with a small quantity and add more only if necessary.

Don't Ignore Split Ends

Sometimes the reason hair continues to look rough isn't your shampoo or conditioner but existing damage. Split ends cannot be permanently repaired with a product. Trimming damaged ends is the only way to remove them.

Getting a trim every six to eight weeks, depending on your hair and styling habits, can help keep your ends looking neater and prevent severe splitting from spreading further up the strand.

Give Your Hair The Right Nutrition

Haircare doesn’t stop at the bathroom door. Your diet is also important to the health of your hair and overall hair growth.

Make sure your meals are protein-rich and your diet is balanced with iron, zinc and healthy fats. Eggs, dairy products, legumes, nuts, seeds, fish and a variety of fruits and vegetables are all part of a balanced diet.

Staying hydrated is also important. Although drinking water won’t cure frizz, proper hydration is important for health and helps you maintain a healthy routine.

The monsoon monster may come out every year, but that doesn’t mean you have to surrender to frizzy, lifeless hair. Keep your scalp clean, moisturize, use a nourishing mask, avoid overheating and handle wet hair gently. With a few daily habits, your monsoon haircare routine is going to be much easier to maintain and healthier.
