Makeup Looks That Complement Hooded Eyes: Easy Techniques for a Beautiful Eye Look

Hooded eyes have a very beautiful shape, but applying eye makeup can be a little different. When you have a hooded eyelid, the crease is less visible in the mobile eyelid because your excess skin or the natural structure of the brow area partially fills the gap. So traditional eyeshadow and eyeliner techniques may not always work.

Makeup Looks for Hooded Eyes

The good news is there are a lot of makeup looks that perfectly complement hooded eyes. But don’t try to remake your eye shape completely. From carefully placed eyeshadow to carefully applied eyeliner, it’s so simple to make the eyes look more defined and open.

Soft Matte Eyeshadow Look

A soft matte eyeshadow look is the best for hooded eyes. If you want to go with a neutral, light shade on the eyelid, start with a neutral, light shade over the eyelid. Then use a medium-toned matte shade just above your natural crease.

When you have eyes open, you’d like to put the transition shade a little higher to give the crease a bit more visible. Blend the colour and keep it from being sharp.

A slightly deeper shade can be focused on the outer corner for definition. The outer part of the eyelid can also be lighter so you can get a brighter look.

Subtle Smokey Eye

Hooded eyes can look beautiful with a smokey eye, but heavy application on the entire lid may make it look as though the eyes are smaller. Instead, concentrate darker shades toward the outer corner and blend them upward and outward.

Add color in some complementary colors, brown, bronze, plum or charcoal. A soft smokey effect can add depth to the eye shape, without overwhelming the eye shape.

When you develop a smokey eye, keep your eyes open on the makeup. You’ll be able to tell how much colour is still there if you’re looking good at it.

Shimmer on the Centre of the Lid

A touch of shimmer can draw attention to the eyes. Put a subtle metallic or shimmer shade in the centre of the visible eyelid and don’t get too deep into the crease.

Champagne, gold, rose-gold and soft bronze shades will work beautifully for daytime or evening makeup. For a more dramatic look, build the shimmer gradually instead of applying a thick layer at once.

If your eyelids are prone to transferring makeup, it is advisable to use an eyeshadow primer underneath and let it set before applying shimmer.

The Right Eyeliner Technique

Eyeliner can be one of the trickiest parts of makeup for hooded eyes. A very thick line can take up much of the visible eyelid space. You may want to keep the line relatively thin along the lash line and gradually extend it to the outer corner.

A small wing can result in a lift. But the most flattering angle depends on your eye shape. It’s helpful to apply eyeliner while looking straight ahead into a mirror so you can see how the line appears when your eyes are naturally open.

Brown or dark eyeshadow close to the upper lash line can give the appearance of definition without looking too intense.

Bright Inner Corners

We can also add a small amount of light-reflecting eyeshadow in the inner corners of the eye to make the eyes appear more awake. A pale champagne, ivory or soft gold shade will work well.

In the daytime, do not apply too much product, especially when it’s daytime. A little bit of lightened product, carefully mixed may be used in a small amount can bring a subtle brightening effect.

Mascara-Focused Makeup

When you need a simple eye makeup look, look for the lashes. If you curl the lashes before applying mascara, they will lift away from the eyelid.

Choose a mascara that provides length and definition, and pay attention to the outer lashes for a lifted effect. If mascara always creeps up onto your upper eyelid, a smudge-resistant or tubing formula could be a good option.

False lashes can work, too, especially styles that are longer near the outer corners. But too big of lashes may wash the eyelid out and overwhelm a more subtle makeup look.

Tips for Long-Lasting Makeup

Hooded eyelids can create more skin-to-skin contact so eyeshadow and eyeliner can be more prone to crease or to transfer. An eye primer will make a smoother base and prolong makeup’s lifespan.

Using thin layers of product is an effective technique. Rather than apply a lot of eyeshadow or eyeliner immediately, slowly build in intensity to control the final look.

As always, remember that there’s no single “correct” way to do makeup for hooded eyes. Each eye shape is different and techniques that work for one person may need to be adjusted for another.

Hooded eyes provide a great canvas for experimenting with different makeup styles. Soft matte eyeshadow, strategically placed transition shades, subtle smokey eyes, delicate eyeliner, inner-corner highlights and lifted lashes can all complement the natural shape.

Instead of hiding the hooded eyelid, makeup can accentuate what you already have. You can create everything from an effortless everyday look to a glamorous evening style that makes your eyes stand out.
