Soft Glam vs Heavy Glam: Why Indian Women Are Choosing Makeup That Feels More Like Them

For years, Indian beauty trends have been associated with sharply sculpted cheekbones, full-coverage foundations, dramatic lashes, bold eyes and heavily defined bridal makeup. The beauty mood is evolving. In 2026, soft glam is having a major moment with more Indian women asking for makeup that enhances their natural features rather than completely changing their appearance.

But this does not mean heavy glam is disappearing. Far from it. Both styles still hold a place in Indian beauty and women are more and more choosing between them based on their looks, outfit, occasion, venue and personal comfort. The bigger change is that makeup is not so much about adhering to trends but about finding a look that really feels authentic.

Soft Glam Is Taking Centre Stage

Soft glam is often misunderstood by people as wearing very little makeup. That’s all part of the look and part of the look is a few products and techniques. The difference is how they’re applied. Soft glam is not about layers or heavily sculpted finish, but about bright skin, subtle definition and features that are still you.

The skin is kept fresh and natural and blush and highlighter are made to integrate perfectly into the skin. Brows are kept naturally shaped and not too carved out. The eyes are more natural looking: soft shades, smooth edges and less dramatic lashes and nude, pink, peach and muted lip colours are prevalent.

“Soft glam is all about fresh, radiant skin, softly defined eyes, natural brows and subtle lip colours,” says makeup artist Khizra Fatima.

Another reason for its popularity is versatility. Soft glam can work for daytime celebrations, intimate weddings, festive gatherings, engagement ceremonies, brunches and even professional events. It can also go well with heavily embellished clothing without overwhelming the overall look.

Why Women Are Asking For A More Natural Finish

One of the biggest attractions of soft glam is that it allows the individual to remain at the centre of the look. People don’t have to see the makeup first but the person’s face, the skin and overall look.

Sanya Mehta, founder of SOHNI, says the conversation with clients has changed drastically. “Three years ago, almost every bride wanted the same thing: full coverage, heavy contouring and dramatic lashes. Today, I’d say seven out of ten clients walk in and tell me, ‘I don’t want to look like I’m wearing makeup.’”

Photography may also contribute to this preference. Natural-looking skin appears to be particularly flattering in daylight and close-up photographs and excessive contouring or very heavy base makeup can be more visible in some lighting conditions.

Soft glam also pairs nicely with statement jewellery and elaborate outfits. When a bride already wears a heavily embroidered lehenga, ornate jewellery and intricate hair accessories, a softer makeup look can create balance.

Heavy Glam Still Has Its Place

Despite the rise of soft glam, heavy makeup is still a part of Indian beauty culture. Grand weddings, evening receptions, fashion shoots and stage events often call for stronger definition.

Indian wedding venues can have bright lighting, fine decoration, big stages and long hours of photography. A very subtle makeup look can sometimes get visually lost in the chaos.

“For a big fat Indian wedding with bright stage lights, a heavily embroidered lehenga and lots of photography, soft glam can sometimes lose its impact,” says Mehta. “That’s where heavy glam still has an important role.”

Heavy glam can include a fuller-coverage base, stronger contouring, defined brows, dramatic eye makeup, false lashes and bolder lip colours. When they are well-balanced, these elements can complement an elaborate outfit instead of compete with it.

There’s also an emotional side to heavy glam. For some women, getting dressed up is an opportunity to transform. A wedding, reception or milestone celebration is one of the few occasions when someone actively wants to look more dramatic than they do every day.

The Rise Of Personalised Makeup

Perhaps the most interesting beauty trend in India is not the dominance of soft glam over heavy glam. It is the growing demand for personalised makeup.

Women are more and more asking makeup artists to consider their facial features, skin type, outfit, jewellery, hairstyle and the occasion before deciding on a final look.

“As a makeup artist, I’ve noticed that my clients today aren’t asking for a particular trend as often as they used to,” says Fatima. “Instead they’re asking for makeup that suits them— their features, skin type, outfit, personality, and the occasion.”

This is a larger shift in the way beauty trends are consumed. Rather than simply parroting a celebrity and mimicking the viral makeup look exactly, women are taking fashion trends on board to make them their own.

Soft Glam And Heavy Glam Can Coexist

The choice is not always one or the other. Modern makeup is incorporating elements from both aesthetics.

A bride might choose a soft, luminous complexion while opting for a more defined eye. For someone attending a cocktail evening, they might wear nice skin makeup with a bold red or berry lip. Another person might prefer natural brows and blush but bold lashes for a little extra impact.

This flexibility makes the distinction between soft and heavy glam less rigid. Makeup can be molded to the mood, lighting and environment of the setting.

In the end, there is no universal winner between soft glam and heavy glam. Soft glam works beautifully when the goal is to look fresh, radiant and like yourself, while heavy glam can create the drama and definition that certain occasions demand.

The real beauty shift in 2026 is therefore not about choosing one aesthetic over another. It is about having the freedom to choose what works for you. Whether subtle, dramatic or somewhere in between, the best makeup look is ultimately the one that makes you feel confident, comfortable and authentically yourself.
