Ashadha Purnima 2026: Date, Puja Vidhi, Shubh Muhurat, Rituals and Significance

According to the Hindu calendar, Ashadha Purnima 2026 will take place on Wednesday, July 29, 2026. The Purnima Tithi will begin in the early morning hours of July 29 and end on July 30 (timings may vary depending on the location and the Panchang). Devotees are advised to consult their local Panchang for city-specific muhurat.

Shubh Muhurat for Ashadha Purnima usually coincides with the duration of the Purnima Tithi. Many devotees perform the puja on the morning after taking a holy bath and others do so on the evening moonrise. Since this day is associated with Guru Purnima, special worship is dedicated to spiritual teachers, saints and the sage Ved Vyasa, who is one of the greatest sages of Hindu tradition and the compiler of the Vedas as well as the author of the Mahabharata.

Puja Vidhi starts with the devotees rising before sunrise and taking a holy bath either in the holy river or at home using clean water and chanting prayers. The home temple is cleaned and decorated with flowers, lamps and rangoli. Idols or images of Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva, Goddess Lakshmi and Guru Ved Vyasa are worshipped with flowers, sandalwood paste, incense, fruits, sweets and other various special things. Many of the devotees also pay respect to their parents, teachers and spiritual gurus by touching their feet and seeking blessings.

On Guru Purnima, disciples give flowers, fruits, clothes or books to their gurus as a token of gratitude. Temples, ashrams, and schools have special satsangs, bhajans, spiritual discussions, meditation sessions, and community prayers. Many followers read chapters of sacred scriptures like the Bhagavad Gita, Bhagavata Purana, Ramayana or the Guru Gita during the day.

Fasting is another important aspect of Ashadha Purnima. Some devotees do a whole fast and others eat fruits, milk and simple satvik food after puja. Spiritual purification, self-discipline and inner peace are the objectives of the fast. Charity is also highly important and devotees donate food, clothes, grains, books or money on this day so that they can be able to give some kind deed to the needy and bring good karma to them.

From a spiritual perspective, the role of teachers in society is very important, Guru Purnima. In Hindu philosophy, a guru is a person who helps to remove the darkness of ignorance and leads the disciple toward knowledge and enlightenment. Teachers, mentors, parents and spiritual leaders are the ones who make life much better in a human life and one that will be able to learn more in a lifetime.

The festival is also significant in Buddhism with the Buddha giving his first sermon in Sarnath the day after he attained enlightenment. Many Buddhist monks and followers celebrate the day by meditating, praying and teachings. In Jainism, Guru Purnima is associated with Lord Mahavira and his first disciple Gautam Swami and so it is an important day for Jain followers as well.

The full moon is interpreted as an energy source and spiritual awareness. People who pray in the morning, meditate, do yoga and participate in religious ceremonies are able to access divine blessings and inner peace.

As Ashadha Purnima 2026 approaches, temples and spiritual centres across India will see large numbers of devotees going to festivals and gathering. Whether it is Guru Purnima, a day of worship or self-reflection, the festival inspires millions to discover wisdom, gratitude, compassion and lifelong learning. With respect to teachers and spiritual discipline, devotees celebrate the centuries-old tradition of knowledge that has influenced Indian culture.
