Sages and saints have taught us over and over again that the ultimate reality is far beyond the reach of our grasp. The Supreme Being (the Creator, Preserver and Transformer of the universe) is infinite, forever and all-pervading. Everything from the smallest particle to the grand scheme of the universe is sustained by this divine presence. But the human mind tends to reduce God to a notion that is suited to our limited understanding.

When we recognize that real spirituality is when we recognize that God is not to be left to human imagination only, true spirituality starts when we recognize that we can’t make God in our imagination. That is when we must be humble to God rather than create God in our own image of ourselves and the universe that holds all to be God, when we must humble ourselves before the mystery of the universe that is God.
Human Perceptions of God.
People tend to conceive of God according to their own life and life in general. Some see God as a protector, others a provider of wealth, success or happiness. These may well lead to faith in God and others to spiritual wisdom, but God is what God is: a God not to be defined by an identifier and what is to be believed in God is to be found in all that is right and great.
The Divine is not exclusive to one form or concept. An honest perception is a glimpse of the infinite reality that is not in language, logic and imagination.
Scriptures describe numerous universes and countless worlds for us to think of and how creation extends far beyond what we are able to see with our eyes. The infinite is not something that we can calculate, or that can be understood by our mind.
The Importance of Surrender.
One of the essential teachings of spirituality is surrender. People tend to think we have wealth, knowledge and accomplishments we have to give to God. Human beings often feel we are not to give to God. Everything belongs to God.
The greatest gift is not material wealth but surrender of ego. When pride, attachment and self-centeredness are dissolved, love can be opened to divine grace.
Surrender is not weakness; it is the acknowledgment that the most important puzzle in life has a deeper understanding and is made open by wisdom more profound than ours.
When is human knowledge limited.
Today’s modern civilization has made great scientific and technological progress, and yet so many of the most basic questions of life are still unanswered.
- Where did the universe start out from?
- Why does creation exist?
- What else exists beyond birth and death?
The ancient spiritual traditions remind us that no one witnessed the beginning of creation. Even the wisest philosophers understood the limitations of human comprehension.
The more genuine knowledge one gains, the more humble one becomes. For the Bhagavad Gita, true wisdom is accompanied by vinaya humility and freedom from arrogance.
Divine Patience and Compassion.
What is most comforting to spiritual philosophy is the knowledge that God is infinitely patient.
Rather than immediately judging human mistakes, the Divine is the one who allows every soul to learn, grow and evolve. Spiritual literature often illustrates this in Lord Krishna’s efforts to make peace before the Mahabharata war.
Krishna, despite being repeatedly rejected, continued to seek reconciliation. He first sought justice and then compromise and finally even the smallest bit of compromise. Only after every peaceful route had been exhausted was conflict inevitable.
And this narrative indicates that divine compassion always precedes divine justice.
Ego: The Greatest Obstacle.
The greatest barrier between humanity and God is not distance but ego.
When people are so deeply attached to their power, possessions and personal glory, there’s very little room for spiritual awareness. The ego demands to be in charge, to control and to think that it has all the power and to be superior, and spiritual living is about humility, gratitude and surrender.
Relaxing ego dominance means that divine qualities such as compassion, patience, and wisdom are born from the heart.
God's Love Is Unlike Human Love.
Human beings have emotions, expectations and circumstances that fluctuate. Affection can be linked to success, failure, agreement or disagreement.
Divine love is entirely different.
God’s love is unconditional, permanent, and all-embracing. It does not depend on personal gain or external conditions. But it seeks complete union with every soul.
So that is why spiritual traditions describe God not only as loving, but also as Love itself.
We all have an experience of kindness, forgiveness, friendship and compassion and that is one tiny glimpse of the infinite source.
Living with Universal Compassion.
If God is the source of unconditional love, then spiritual seekers are supposed to extend that love to all living beings.
The Bhagavad Gita praises those who delight in the welfare of all creatures (sarvabhūtahite ratāḥ). Compassion is therefore not just for family or friends but for humanity, animals, nature and all creation.
As a result, kindness, forgiveness and selfless service are more like spiritual realization than moral obligation.
Faith and Divine Protection.
Some of the most reassuring teachings in the Bhagavad Gita is the assurance that those who sincerely desire and seek God have divine protection.
The verse ‘Ananyāś cintayanto māṁ... yogakṣemaṁ vahāmy aham’ (Bhagavad Gita 9.22) expresses the assurance that the Divine supports those who place their trust in Him.
This does not mean there is any escape from life’s pain, but rather it is the fact that real faith will never be neglected.
Walking the Spiritual Path.
Spiritual development is not achieved through intellectual knowledge alone. It develops through daily practice:
- Meditation and prayer
- Selfless service
- Humility
- Compassion
- Gratitude
- Self-reflection
- Trust in divine wisdom
As these qualities grow stronger, people experience more peace and a closer connection with the Divine.
In the end, the journey to God is from ego to surrender, from pride to humility, and from conditional love to unconditional love. Human knowledge is only so much compared to the infinite mystery of creation. But divine compassion never leaves, in the same way that the desire to know everything about the world and to find the truth, peace and self-realization of oneself is very much in play with the world. So by being humble, trusting that God is wise and loving all beings of all types, we begin to reflect the divine qualities that make up the universe. And to see that God is the Creator and love is love is love, we find the ultimate purpose of living life: to be the Divine and to be able to live in the presence of God and we become the helpers of the Divine and to be compassionate and wise and to be the agents of goodwill.
