The historic Maha Kumbabhishekam of the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple in Madurai was held Thursday 17th, 2026 - a landmark after 17 years. Thousands of devotees came to witness the elaborate consecration rituals at one of Tamil Nadu’s most prominent temples.

The previous Kumbabhishekam was conducted on 8 April 2009. Thus, the ceremony in 2026 marked the return of the temple's grand consecration rituals after more than a decade and a half.
Maha Kumbabhishekam held in the morning
The main consecration ceremony was held in the morning after several days of elaborate religious preparations. According to The New Indian Express, the main Kumbabhishekam took place between 7:33 AM and 7:50 AM IST.
DT Next reported that the consecration of the 12 main towers of the temple and two golden vimanas was conducted at about 7:40 AM. The sacred water-filled vessels were carried from the Yagasala before being used for the consecration rituals.
Sacred Rituals and Vedic Chants
The ceremony followed a series of traditional rituals starting in the early hours. Priests completed the last phase of the Yagasala puja before the sacred vessels were taken in procession towards the temple towers.
The consecration was conducted in the presence of religious hymns and the sounds of traditional percussion instruments. The temple’s towers and golden vimanas were poured over with water as a part of the Kumbabhishekam ceremony.
All India Radio News confirmed that priests performed pujas in all the 12 gopurams of the temple with holy water used during the ceremony.
Thousands of Devotees Witness Historic Event
There were large numbers of devotees in Madurai for the occasion. People had been provided colour-coded passes to see the ceremony from certain places around the temple to watch the ceremony.
The Madurai district administration had made a lot of preparations for the expected crowds, including special buses, parking and medical camps, and security measures. The administration expected a very large number of devotees to visit the city for the event.
The district administration also arranged LED screens at various places so that devotees outside the immediate temple premises could follow the ceremony.

Why the ceremony was held after 17 years?
The previous Kumbabhishekam was held in 2009. The temple consecrations are regularly held but the schedule at the Meenakshi temple was delayed after a huge fire in February 2018 on Veera Vasantharayar Mandapam.
The temple underwent extensive restoration and renovation work before the latest consecration could take place. 186 renovation works were done at a cost of ₹32.29 crore according to The New Indian Express. These included construction of gopurams, mandapams and electrical infrastructure.
On a Day that is very important in Madurai.
The ceremony on September 17 was attended by devotees, priests, officials and public leaders for one of the temple’s most major religious events in recent years.
The completion of the Maha Kumbabhishekam was a culmination of the preparations and restoration works. After the ceremony, general devotees were scheduled to enter the temple for darshan from 10 AM, according to reports.
